No Turning Back

When I was younger, there was a song we used in sing in church called I have decided to follow Jesus. In it were the lyrics "I have decided to follow Jesus; no turning back, no turning back." I understood the song to mean that a commitment to Jesus meant complete obedience to him without compromise. It seemed simple enough at the time, but I did not fully understand it until I had to make a very difficult choice. One day while I was contemplating my future plans for higher education and advancement up the corporate ladder, God reminded me about His agenda. I reasoned that some time in the future I would be laboring full time for His kingdom but I never figured that day could come so quickly. His timing can be unpredictable but I should always be ready to go whenever and wherever He wants me to go. There is no turning back to my own plans and ways of doing things. Letting go of my agenda is hard but He requires it so that I can follow Him wholeheartedly. In Luke chapter 17, Jesus informs His disciples about His second coming. He says "On that day no one who is on the roof of his house, with his goods inside, should go down to get them. Likewise, no one in the field should go back for anything." Through this passage I am reminded that Jesus wants me to follow His lead and do things His way without turning back and holding on to things that have no eternal value in my life.
